Based on student interest we added more rifle and shotgun classes to our Sept/Oct schedule. Don’t have an AR or a shotgun? We have loaner guns available. We already have many guest instructors booked for 2027, including Tim Herron, Jeff Gonzales, and Keith Tyler (using Dustin Solomon’s NURO devices).
It’s hot now, but it will cool off as fall arrives. Plan ahead to get some shooting practice and training during the upcoming months!
UPCOMING CLASSES
In addition to the weekend group classes, weekday private lessons are available on request. Two hours, $150, any topic, any gun, any skill level.
DEFENSIVE PISTOL SKILLS 1 and PERSONAL TACTICS SKILLS
Our Defensive Pistol Skills 1 class begins where the Texas License to Carry Permit class ends: teaching how to carry on body, holster selection, and realistic shooting responses to real world threats. Even if you “only carry in the car”, having the pistol in a holster you could put on if needed, and knowing how to draw from it quickly, is an important skill. We have dozens of loaner holsters – no need to purchase new gear for the class! Here’s a short video of some of the drills we run in the course.
Personal Tactics Skills, an indoor class, is paired with Defensive Pistol Skills 1. DPS-1 in the morning, PTS in the afternoon so you can get a full training day from your visit to the A-Zone. The Personal Tactics Skills course teaches the most essential self-defense material: answering the questions “what is the right thing to do” in all the most common self defense situations. The most common mistakes armed citizens make in defensive incidents are failures of tactics – not shooting skills. There is more to defensive firearms training than just drawing and shooting drills. Being able to make “good first decisions” in limited time is more important than having a sub-one-second draw. The PTS course uses interactive drills like the Image Based Decisional Drills flashcards, video and live action simulation training (with red guns in the classroom building) to give students practice making those critical decisions. Don’t have time to take the PTS course? IBDD creator Shelley Hill explains more about Image Based Decisional Drills and ways to use it in this video.
GREG ELLIFRITZ CLOSE QUARTERS SHOOTING
Greg is returning to the A-Zone on Sunday, September 20 to teach a one day Close Quarters Shooting live fire course. Uncle Zo wrote an in-depth review of Greg’s close quarter instructor class, and the article shows many of the techniques you will learn from Greg in this course.
If you or anyone you know is planning to get their LTC in September, I suggest taking our online course and attending our Basic Pistol (LTC Completion) class on Sept 5 to get your paperwork submitted ASAP. From Texas DPS:
The Texas Department of Public Safety – Regulatory Services Division is excited to share that we will soon be launching a new licensing platform that will streamline processing and enhance the applicant experience.
This new Enterprise Licensing System, called RSD Connect, is tentatively scheduled to go live on September 30, 2026.
With this transition, there will be planned downtime to allow for migration of data into our new system. This downtime is tentatively scheduled for September 13 – 29, 2026, but is subject to change depending on many moving parts that must be aligned for the migration to take place.
STAFF & ALUMNI NEWS
Karl taught 3 days of training for Crescent City CCW near New Orleans, certifying new Force on Force Scenario instructors and running an Advanced Handgun course, where host Eric Hite earned his KR Training Defensive Pistol Skills challenge coin!
Karl will be traveling to Beaumont in August to get certified as a 4H Shooting Coach, to assist with Lee County 4H Shooting practice sessions held at the A-Zone this fall. KR Training was recognized as “2026 Volunteer of the Year” at the recent Lee County 4H awards banquet, shown here with Lee County 4H coordinator Geri Kline.
Eric “Clark” Victorin designed and taught the new Shotgun 3 course in August, assisted by Dave Reichek. We will offer that class again in early 2027.
DISCOUNT CODES
I have collected up all the discount codes we have set up with vendors we recommend. Alumni of KR Training classes will find them in the monthly e-news email. You’ll have to open the email and scroll to the bottom to find them. It’s a reward for actually opening and reading the email!
REFRESHER DEALS
Re-take any class you’ve taken before for half price! Contact me to get the alumni discount code. Firearms skills deteriorate without practice. Most ranges don’t allow drawing from a holster, shooting quickly, moving or shooting from cover. If you don’t practice the skills you learned in class, they won’t be there when you need them.
BLOG O RAMA
All the articles you missed if you don’t follow the KR Training Facebook page and Instagram feed. Eric Lamberson’s Wednesday Wisdom posts are similar to Greg’s Weekend Knowledge Dump, full of great information. Our own Uncle Zo has returned to blogging and shooting after a long hiatus.
The Black Cat Choir was asked to learn Ted Nugent’s “Stranglehold” as a special request for a private party.
I’m also in a Chicago (and 70’s horn rock) tribute band. We played a sold out show at the Palace Theatre in downtown Bryan, Texas in June. Here’s our version of “Saturday In the Park”.
Big shows coming up: I’ll be with the Round Top Rockers (a Black Cat Choir side band) as the headliner for the Thursday Sept 3 night at the Fayette County Fair, and the full Black Cat Choir will perform at the Washington County Fair on Sept 12.
